Biography

Gianluca Piombo (b. 1995) is an Italian composer, pianist and conductor. A graduate in Composition with highest honours, distinction and special mention from the “A. Buzzolla” Conservatory in Adria, where he studied with Cristian Carrara, he also holds diplomas in Piano and Orchestral Conducting, the latter from the “A. Pedrollo” Conservatory in Vicenza, where he studied with Giancarlo Andretta and Pierangelo Valtinoni. His training also includes a period at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw with Włodzimierz Pawlik.He has received commissions from FORM – Orchestra Filarmonica Marchigiana, Fondazione Pergolesi Spontini, Fondazione Teatro Coccia, Festival Pergolesi Spontini, Festival della Valle d’Itria, the Dutch National Opera Academy and Gioie Musicali International Youth Music Festival. He has collaborated with the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano, FVG Orchestra and Orchestra Senzaspine, and his works have been performed in numerous major Italian theatres.In 2024, he won the Composition Call of the 13ᵗʰ Guido Cantelli International Conducting Prize. His works also received Honourable Mentions at the Brusa Foundation Award in 2024 and 2025.Alongside his work as a composer, he is active as an arranger, conductor, pianist and musicologist.His works are published by Casa Musicale Sonzogno, Edizioni Fondazione Pergolesi Spontini and Sconfinarte.

Full Biography

Gianluca Piombo (b. 1995) is an Italian composer, pianist and conductor. A graduate in Composition with highest honours, distinction and special mention from the “A. Buzzolla” Conservatory in Adria, where he studied with Cristian Carrara, he also holds diplomas in Piano and Orchestral Conducting, the latter from the “A. Pedrollo” Conservatory in Vicenza, where he studied with Giancarlo Andretta and Pierangelo Valtinoni. His training also includes a period at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw as an Erasmus+ scholarship recipient, where he studied, among others, with composer and jazz pianist Włodzimierz Pawlik.Recent commissions include Impressioni Marchigiane – Symphonic Prelude, written in 2026 for FORM – Orchestra Filarmonica Marchigiana, and the musical fable Le peripezie di Pinco Pallino, for which he wrote both music and libretto. Based on a story by M. Pompei, the work was commissioned by Fondazione Pergolesi Spontini in co-production with Orchestra Senzaspine for the 59ᵗʰ Opera Season of the Teatro Pergolesi in Jesi.In 2025, Nozze con delitto, commissioned by Fondazione Teatro Coccia and co-written with S. Santoni and M. Sarcinelli, received its premiere. The same year saw the composition of the symphonic sketch Tales from No Go Zone for FVG Orchestra, which received an Honourable Mention at the second edition of the Brusa Foundation Award.In 2024, Piombo won the Composition Call of the 13ᵗʰ Guido Cantelli International Conducting Prize with Variazioni Sinfoniche. Performed by the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano as the compulsory work of the competition at the Teatro Coccia in Novara, the score also received an Honourable Mention at the first edition of the Brusa Foundation Award.Alongside his work as a composer, Piombo is active as an arranger, conductor, pianist and musicologist. As a musicologist, he collaborated with Cristian Carrara and Marco Attura on the critical edition of Gaspare Spontini’s opera Alcidor for Fondazione Pergolesi Spontini, contributing to the first modern-day performances of several arias from the work. He has also worked as a répétiteur on opera productions at the Teatro Municipale in Piacenza, Teatro Pergolesi in Jesi and Teatro Verdi in Pisa.A significant part of his artistic activity is devoted to music theatre and projects for young and family audiences, in which he works as composer, arranger and conductor. These include La bottega di Figaro (after Il Barbiere di Siviglia), Il filtro magico di Dulcamara (after L’Elisir d’amore) and C’era una volta… Giulia, la Vestale (after La Vestale).His works have been performed at major Italian theatres, including Teatro Gentile in Fabriano, Teatro Pergolesi in Jesi, Teatro Lauro Rossi in Macerata, Teatro Coccia in Novara and Teatro Verdi in Pisa. In addition to the institutions mentioned above, he has received commissions from Festival Pergolesi Spontini, Festival della Valle d’Itria, the Dutch National Opera Academy in Amsterdam and Gioie Musicali International Youth Music Festival.His works are published by Casa Musicale Sonzogno, Edizioni Fondazione Pergolesi Spontini and Sconfinarte.
